Leopard Wrasse
Species: Macropharyngodon meleagris
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Family: Labridae
Overview:
The Leopard Wrasse, also known as the Guinea Fowl Wrasse or Blackspotted Wrasse, is a stunning and highly specialized reef fish prized for its complex patterns and peaceful nature. This species exhibits notable sexual dimorphism. Females display a pale white to tan base color with black or brown irregular spots bordered in blue, while males feature an orangish-red body with iridescent green mottling and richer contrast overall.
Due to their sensitivity and feeding requirements, Leopard Wrasses are best reserved for experienced aquarists. They require a mature aquarium of at least 90 gallons with live rock for foraging and a deep, fine sand bed for burrowing. These wrasses are shy and may be slow to acclimate, often hiding for several days after introduction. They thrive when introduced in small groups of three or more.
Their diet consists primarily of small benthic invertebrates, and they must be offered a variety of enriched meaty foods multiple times daily to maintain weight and health.
