Brand: Livestock (Marine Fish)

Australian Harlequin Tuskfish

Species: Choerodon fasciatus

Origin: Australia

Family: Labridae

Overview:

The Australian Harlequin Tuskfish is one of the most visually impressive and charismatic fish in the marine aquarium trade. Recognized by its vivid blue teeth, electric orange vertical bands, and deep pink tail, this variety from Australia is significantly more vibrant than its Indonesian counterpart. These fish are ideal for aquarists looking to add a bold centerpiece species with a strong personality and striking coloration.

In the wild, Harlequin Tusks inhabit coral-rich reef flats, rocky slopes, and outer reef zones where they forage for crustaceans and invertebrates. In captivity, they require a large tank with plenty of rockwork, caves, and secure hiding spaces.

Care Details:

  • Minimum Tank Size: 120 gallons (5 ft. length minimum recommended)
  • Care Level: Moderate / Intermediate
  • Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
  • Reef Compatible: With Caution (safe with coral, not safe with invertebrates)
  • Diet: Carnivore (meaty foods such as clams, krill, silversides, squid, shrimp)
  • Maximum Size: Up to 10 inches

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72 – 78°F
  • pH: 7.8 – 8.5
  • Salinity: 1.022 – 1.026

Aquarium Care Tips:

The Australian Harlequin Tusk is a hardy and resilient fish once fully acclimated, but it may arrive stressed or lethargic due to shipping. Allow it time to adjust, and consider placing it in an acclimation or isolation box to help reduce stress. After the first week, this fish typically becomes more active and engaging.

While they do not harm coral, they are known to prey on shrimp, snails, crabs, and sometimes even large clams, so they are best suited for fish-only or predator-style reef systems. Regular feedings of nutrient-rich meaty foods will support their immune system and enhance coloration.

Available Sizes:

  • Small (S): 3 – 4"
  • Medium (M): 4 – 5.5"
  • Large (L): 5.5 – 6.5"
  • Extra Large (XL): 6.5"+

  • Photos are for reference only — the fish you receive will not be the exact specimen pictured. Appearance may vary based on sex, maturity, region, and individual variation.
