Flame Angelfish
Species: Centropyge loricula
Origin: Central Pacific (Marshall Islands, Christmas Island, Cebu, Tahiti)
Family: Pomacanthidae
Overview:
The Flame Angelfish is one of the most iconic and sought-after dwarf angels in the hobby, featuring a vibrant red to orange body with bold vertical black bars and blue-edged dorsal and anal fins. Its intense coloration and compact size make it a standout addition to many reef and fish-only systems. While generally hardy and adaptable, this species may nip at corals or clam mantles, so reef compatibility should be approached with caution.
Best kept in aquariums of 70 gallons or more with ample live rock and hiding spaces, the Flame Angel does best when added to a mature system. It should be the last fish introduced into peaceful community tanks to minimize aggression. Sensitivity to copper requires that levels stay well below 0.15 ppm at all times. Coloration varies slightly by collection region, with Marshall Island specimens being more vivid red with thick bars, while Christmas Island and Cebu variants tend to show more orange and thinner or irregular markings.
