Achilles Tang
Species: Acanthurus achilles
Origin: Hawaii, Tahiti, French Polynesia
Family: Acanthuridae
Overview:
The Achilles Tang is a striking and highly sought-after surgeonfish, best known for its velvety black body contrasted by vibrant orange highlights and the signature orange “Achilles heel” spot near the caudal peduncle. Native to the surge zones of the Indo-Pacific, especially around Hawaii and Tahiti, this species thrives in oxygen-rich waters with intense flow and abundant algae for grazing.
In the wild, Achilles Tangs inhabit clear, shallow reef flats with rocky outcroppings and strong current—conditions that must be closely mimicked in captivity for long-term success. Due to their sensitivity and demanding care requirements, they are recommended only for expert-level aquarists.
Care Details:
- Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons (6 ft. length minimum recommended)
- Care Level: Expert Only
- Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
- Reef Compatible: Yes
- Diet: Herbivore (marine algae, Ogo, Nori, and other seaweed-based foods)
- Maximum Size: Up to 8 inches
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72 – 78°F
- pH: 7.8 – 8.5
- Salinity: 1.022 – 1.026
Aquarium Care Guidelines:
- Strong Flow Required: Achilles Tangs require powerful circulation to simulate their natural environment and maintain high oxygen saturation. Multiple flow pumps and oversized protein skimmers are highly recommended.
- Ample Swimming Room: These tangs are active swimmers and need large open areas to move freely. A minimum 6-foot tank is essential.
- Diet: Primarily herbivorous; feed a varied diet rich in marine-based algae such as Nori, Ogo, and high-quality herbivore pellets.
- Aggression: May be aggressive toward other tangs or similar body-shaped fish. Best introduced last or simultaneously with other tangs.
- Health Considerations: Achilles Tangs are highly susceptible to parasites, particularly ich (Cryptocaryon irritans). A parasite-free environment is crucial. All incoming fish, corals, inverts, and algae should be properly quarantined. These fish do not possess the natural immune defenses to recover from protozoan infections.
Available Sizes:
